How do folks, I've just been emailed details of this and wonder if anyone'd like to go along. Details are below.

Edinburgh City Reads at Central Library
IAIN BANKS
Chaired by Alan Taylor
6:30pm Wednesday 16 December 2009
Reference Library Reading Room, Edinburgh Central Library, George IV Bridge

‘Baroque, digressive, kinetic, teeming with big ideas and grand theories, it’s a novel to get lost in ... gripping’ The Times on Transition

The second of the Edinburgh City Reads, Central Library’s new events series, explores the work of one of Scotland’s most successful contemporary authors. Iain Banks has written over twenty books and enjoyed great success in his career with titles such as The Crow Road, The Wasp Factory, The Steep Approach to Garbadale and his most recent, Transition. His success is unique in that it has been achieved in two genres: literary fiction; and the science fiction books written under the name Iain M Banks. He will be discussing his career and work with Alan Taylor, writer and journalist, who will be coaxing the best from Banks. There will be a reading, an audience Q&A, and a book signing.
The event is FREE and complimentary drinks will be served. Booking is essential, email [masked].

me again - So in summation, it's free, there's booze (also free) and you've got M. Banksy probably being pretentious about stuff and possibly tearing up passports for a small fee (OK I made that bit up).

I suggest we meet in the Frankenstein Bar at any time after 5:30pm, which gives us a pre-occasional window (as I believe they're now called in my head, at least) of an hour or so. I'll be there a little bit before if anyone pops by early. The pub is just round the corner from the library at 26 George IV Bridge. Not an Edinburgh expert myself, but it's on Google Earth so there you go - apparently there's a holographic monster, which I'm sure will prepare us rightly so for Mr. Banks.

Again, it's free but you've got to book via the email address above. So do so, and then RSVP via the Meetup site so we all know who and if anyone's coming along.

Hope to see y'all there. Cheers and that!

Colin

addendum - alas I will no longer be able to make my own meetup as I have quite spectacularly buggered my ankle via the medium of Christmas 'celebration.' Sorry folks. Hopefully someone will show up. I might send a holographic representation of myself. If you see Frankenstein's monster though, that's not me. Honest.

Banks is a funny speaker and very good extemporaneously. His answers were limited somewhat by the rather fatuous questions from the interviewer, but even those were better than nothing. "Mingus Banks" was a great story, as was the burning nipple.
    •  Iain Banks is as good a spouter and ranter as he is a writer, and no doubt the two attributes are linked. He is an entertaining speaker - just wind up and let him go. Good fun.
